Pulsations-The Project

The main purpose of this garden (6 x 4) to be featured at Hampton Court Flower Show 2008 (8th-13th July) is to demonstrate the possibilities of advanced 3d modelling software programs and the processes of digital fabrication applied to the 21st century urban plot.

The garden was inspired by the rhythmical processes of natural forces and how through its undulating movements those forces are transformed into forms found everywhere in Nature: the subtle patterns of water, the formation of mountains, the flowing of lava, etc.

The entire surface will be made of recyclable-waterproof fire retardant expanded polystyrene (EPS) cut and carved with a contemporary computer numerical control (CNC) machine and coated in a plastic base and sprayed with black paint. The floor will be finished with a low maintenance resin bound surface using a range of natural and recycled aggregates.

The contractions and expansions of the material resemble pulsations travelling through a landscape and behave as a dynamic backdrop for the planting: a low water-requirement drought-resistant garden, taking into account our increasingly warm climate and the effects of climate change. With its spiky and dramatic shapes the plants are bold contrasts to the smooth surface.

The garden can be enjoyed in different ways: relax by the pond, watch TV - an weatherproof LCD screen, have a drink or meal by the table or just do some work.
